“Safety Advice for the Real World”
With regard to food safety, it is a legal requirement for staff working in a
food business to be supervised and instructed and/or trained to a level
appropriate for their work activity. Effectively, this means that the greater
the food handling duties and responsibilities for supervising food handlers,
the greater the level of training required.
With regard to health & safety training, the Health and Safety at Work
Act 1974 requires you to provide whatever information, instruction, training
and supervision as is necessary to ensure, so far as is reasonably
practicable, the health and safety at work of your employees.
In addition, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 identify situations where health & safety training is particularly important such as when new staff start work, on exposure to new or increased risks and where existing skills or knowledge need updating.
Well trained staff need less supervision, are less likely to cause accidents or food poisoning and generally mean that your business is more likely to operate safely and successfully.
It is also important to remember that training should not be seen as a one off exercise and it is necessary to ensure that training is refreshed or updated regularly. The CIEH recommends that refresher training is carried out at least every three years.
We are a registered training centre for the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) so we can provide a range of nationally recognised qualifications for your staff. These range from half day induction or refresher courses for all staff through to 5 day courses for senior staff and business owners.
Our courses provide practical insights into legal compliance as well as the necessary knowledge to help your business operate at high levels of safety. Until recently, our course tutor had been the Principal Tutor for Oxford City Council’s food safety training programme for 15 years, so you can be assured of receiving high quality training from an experienced tutor.
We can also provide courses tailored to your specific needs at times and places that are convenient to you, so if you have a particular training need please contact us.

All Chartered Institute of Environmental Health Courses follow the national system of rating learning levels. CIEH courses range from level 1 to level 4 so you can select which is most appropriate for the trainee concerned.

We recognise that it can be daunting for someone to attend a course and complete an assessment if they have language or literacy issues.
The CIEH produce course books and examination papers in a variety of languages to help to overcome this problem.
We can also assist with some literacy issues by offering oral rather than written exams or other reasonable adjustments to the assessment process to help candidates be successful.
Our tutors have also run courses using interpreters so are used to this process if required.
Please contact us to discuss any concerns you may have.
Our course tutors are all highly experienced in food safety and health and safety matters, and all are registered tutors with the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health.
They are all qualified Environmental Health Practitioners who have many years experience in tutoring these courses and enforcing the relevant legislation so can provide very relevant practical examples to back up the theoretical training.
Our principal tutor has 25 years experience of providing this training, including over 15 years as the principal food safety tutor for Oxford City Council’s Environmental Health Service, so we are well placed to provide high quality, relevant and interesting training for your business.
We feel that our course fees are competitive.
For in house training courses we charge a fee for the trainer plus any certification costs charged by the accrediting body (i.e the CIEH.). This means that the more people you train at once, the more cost effective it becomes. However, we do set maximum candidate levels to maintain the quality of our courses.
For individual candidates, our fees vary depending upon the course required but they are still very competitive.
Currently, our course fees for candidates attending our open rather than in house
courses are:-
Level 2 Awards in Food Safety or Health & Safety
Level 3 Award in Supervising Food Safety
Level 4 Award in Managing Food Safety
These prices include CIEH examination fees, course textbook, lunch and refreshments
Please contact us for details of fees for the other courses we provide.
We recognise that every business is unique and so it is not always possible to find the specific training course run in the exact way that you are looking for.
Maybe you need the course running outside working hours or split into smaller units.
Maybe you are wanting to combine some elements of different courses.
Maybe you want a course that’s very specific to your business.
In order to help with this situation, we can tailor courses to suit your particular requirements. Whether it is the subject, timing, location, or anything else that you need to change, please contact us and we can try and meet your exact requirements.
